Boston was red hot with 8 straight wins at the end of April and in early May but they’ve leveled off quite a bit with losses in five of their last six which includes getting swept at home against the Cardinals this past weekend. Seattle would like to continue to add to the Red Sox misery, as the Mariners missed out on a sweep in Detroit but have started off their current road trip with a series win.

The Mariners (20-20) are road favorites on Monday night with George Kirby on the mound. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 2.62 ERA on the year. Kirby just threw 7.0 shutout innings against the Rangers on Tuesday, his third straight start completing the 7th inning.
Seattle is just 5 games out of 1st place in the AL West despite their .500 record. That’s not a bad mark considering they have the worst team BA in the majors (.225) as well as a bottom five OPS (.675). The Mariners’ pitching has been saving them this season, something they hope continues against a Red Sox team that managed only 5 hits on Sunday.
The box score says Boston got swept this weekend by the Cardinals – which they did – but it could have easily been a series win if not for two blown saves by closer Kenley Jansen. Sunday’s game was a downright ugly 9-1 loss, which makes you wonder if the Red Sox’ confidence is waning a bit heading into the meeting with the Mariners.
Tanner Houck (3-2, 5.26 ERA) tries to get Boston back on track as he starts Monday’s series opener. Houck has allowed at least 3ER in four straight starts, and has a 5.73 ERA at home this season.
