Milwaukee Needs a Big Weekend

The offshore sportsbooks have the Marlins vs Brewers Friday total at just 6 runs, and even that might be on the high side with this pitching matchup. Corbin Burnes – the reigning Cy Young award winner – goes for Milwaukee but he’s up against the guy who is the favorite to be named best pitcher in the NL in 2022 in Sandy Alcantara.

This is a huge weekend for the 83-73 Brewers against the 65-91 Marlins considering Milwaukee is trying to catch Philadelphia for the final wild card spot. The Phillies have lost five in a row, but they still hold a 0.5 game lead over Milwaukee and play the Nationals this weekend with Philadelphia leading the season series 13-2 this year.

Alcantara (14-8, 2.32 ERA) being on the mound automatically gives the Marlins some value even as road underdogs. The right-hander just had two straight dominating outings against Washington, throwing a total of 17 innings while allowing just 2 ER while striking out 18. Alcantara’s 3.34 ERA in September is still his highest of any month this season.

Burnes (11-8, 3.11 ERA) will try to do his part in getting Milwaukee closer to catching Philadelphia in the wild card race. He’s had a couple 5ER allowed outings this month though and has an ERA over 4.40 in both August and September. Burnes’ home ERA (3.38) is actually slightly worse than on the road (2.83).

Marlins vs Brewers Friday Summary

The Marlins vs Brewers Friday pitching matchup on paper looks like a great one, but both Alcantara and Burnes have had their share of shaky – or at least less than dominant – outings as of late. With a total microscopically low the way to go here is on the ‘over.’
