Preparations for the 2026 World Cup are well underway for the USA, and they have finally agreed terms with a new head coach for their home tournament. Mauricio Pochettino will lead the United States into the competition after signing a multi-year deal, according to reports.
Mauricio Pochettino Takes USA Job
The USA have been searching for a successor to Gregg Berhalter since last month after firing the head coach following a disastrous exit in the group stage of the Copa America.
Pochettino has previous experience working alongside Matt Crocker, the US Soccer sporting director. The duo formed a dynamic team during their time in the Premier League with Southampton.
The Argentinean had been among the front-runners for the England job following his departure from Chelsea at the end of the 2023-24 season. Pochettino gained positive reviews for his work in testing conditions at Stamford Bridge after guiding the Blues to a sixth-place finish and the final of the EFL Cup.
The 52-year-old was the number one contender for the U.S. job, and he should have all the skills to build a dynamic team. Pochettino has experienced huge success with young squads, including guiding Tottenham Hotspur to a first-ever Champions League final in 2019.
However, the USA will be among the outsiders for World Cup glory in 2026, with the nation currently priced up at +4000. But, Pochettino has previous experience when it comes to guiding dark horses to the latter stages of major tournaments.
