Detroit (23-25) needs to find some pitching if they want to snap a four game losing streak that has seen them allow 8 runs per game. Toronto (21-26) comes to Comerica Park on Thursday night having lost four of their last six so this matchup features two teams in a slump and the offshore oddsmakers are just as confused as the bettors making this contest basically a toss-up.
Before Betting on May 23 Blue Jays vs Tigers
It can be difficult to find an angle for this game, as the Blue Jays are a sub .500 team on the road and Detroit is just 10-13 at home. Toronto does come in off a nice 9-2 victory over the White Sox, but they were also gigantic favorites in Wednesday’s game. The Tigers went 2-4 on their recent road trip, and were also held scoreless in their last two home games losing 2-0 and 1-0 to the Marlins.
The best way to handicap this matchup is to simply rely on the starting pitchers, and the Tigers seem to have the edge there. Jack Flaherty (1-3, 3.79 ERA) takes the ball for the opener of this 4-game set tied for 5th in MLB with 72 K’s while walking just 8 batters so far. Flaherty has pitched at least 6.0 innings over his last four starts and has allowed over 2 ER just once in that span.
The Blue Jays need to find some consistency at the plate after being blanked 5-0 by the White Sox on Tuesday but then winning 9-2 on Wednesday. Flaherty has been pretty zoned in and only four Toronto players have ever faced him which puts a lot of pressure on Kevin Gausman (2-3, 4.89 ERA) to limit the Detroit offense. Gausman has allowed 18 hits and 9 ER over his last two starts (9.0 IP) but does have better away splits (3.06) than at home (6.20).

May 23 Blue Jays vs Tigers Prediction & Pick
Oddsmakers are calling this a toss-up but this looks like an easy play on the Tigers. Both teams are struggling but Flaherty is a nice slump-breaker for the Tigers, especially with Gausman struggling.Â
