The second Grand Slam of the season is upon us, as the French Open takes center stage on the final week of May. It is the only Grand Slam of the season to be staged on the clay surface, and the formidable force of Rafael Nadal will be missing from the event for the first time since 2005 this year.

There are a number of key considerations that must be taken into account before wagering on the Men’s French Open 2023. Rafael Nadal’s absence is a hugely significant factor, as the 14-time champion won’t be playing in Paris for the first time since making his debut in the Grand Slam back in 2005. His absence will also see the Spaniard slip out of the top 100 in the rankings for the first time since 2003.
Novak Djokovic could be a hugely significant value play for the Grand Slam this year, as he is currently available at +220. The Serb will be the third-seed at the French Open this year, but he will be chasing a record-setting 23rd singles title. Djokovic has previously claimed two victories at the French Open, with the most recent coming in 2021.
However, Carlos Alcaraz will head the betting for the event this year. The top-seed landed a first Grand Slam success at the US Open late last year, before he bypassed the Australian Open to focus on his clay court season. His previous best showing came last year, as he reached the quarterfinals for the first time.
Casper Ruud has always appeared to be a Grand Slam champion of the future from my perspective, and the Norwegian could have a leading chance in Paris this year. The 24-year-old reached the final last year, which was the first of two appearances in the last two of a Grand Slam event.

This will be another competitive edition of the French Open, and cases can be made for many of the top players. From a value perspective, we will be keen to take a chance of Djokovic winning a third title in Paris, while Ruud offers some value based on his previous Grand Slam appearances.
