The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris, France, this summer. Over 10,500 athletes will be in action at the pinnacle of sport, with medals up for grabs in 329 events across 32 sports. But, which nations will stand the best chance of ending the Games with the most medals?
Before Betting On Most Olympic Gold Medals
There are few sporting events that can compete with the Olympics in terms of global interest, with the action throughout the event being watched in all four corners of the globe. However, only a small number of athletes are able to immortalize themselves in the history of the Olympics by winning gold medals.
The race for the top spot in the medal standings this summer will once again be intense, with the USA and China appearing to be the leading contenders to win the most gold medals. The USA have been the dominant nation in the medal table throughout recent history, winning a games-high of 39 golds to top the 2020 standings in Tokyo.
That was the third straight edition of the Olympics in which the U.S. had topped the medal standings, but it was their lowest tally of golds since the 2004 Games in Athens. China is the only nation to have finished above the USA since 1992, topping the standings in their home Olympics in 2008. In fact, they were within two golds of finishing above the U.S. at the 2020 Games.
Host nations have a strong record of gaining success in their home Games, with Japan finishing third in Tokyo in 2020, and Great Britain taking the same position in 2012. Therefore, France could have a dark horse chance of finishing in the top three for the first time since the 1948 edition in London.
