England’s dream of winning a first major trophy since 1966 came crumbling down following a 2-1 defeat in the final of EURO 2024 at the hands of Spain. The defeat could signal the end of the Gareth Southgate era, but which coach could be the next to try their luck with the Three Lions based on the next England manager betting odds?

England were the pre-tournament favorites to win the EUROs, but after underperforming throughout the tournament in Germany, the Three Lions kicked off in Berlin on Sunday as the outsiders. The Three Lions stuttered in the final third throughout the tournament, with Southgate being unable to get the best out of players such as Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham.

Defeat in the final leaves questions remaining over Southgate’s future, but the FA are likely to allow the current coach to decide on his own future. Southgate has experienced more success than any other Three Lions manager since 1966, reaching successive EURO finals, and achieving a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate talked about his future before the start of the tournament, and revealed anything other than success in Germany could see him walk away from the role. The FA are likely to prioritize another English coach should Southgate depart, meaning that Graham Potter and Eddie Howe will rank among the leading contenders for the position.

However, the FA could once again opt to promote from within after experiencing huge success with Southgate after being promoted from the U21 position. Lee Carsley has already done something that Southgate was unable to do in that role after winning the European U21 Championship in 2023, marking the first time that the Three Lions had won the tournament since 1984.

The next appointment by the FA could be the most crucial in recent memory, as England will have two years to prepare for potential World Cup glory across North America. Lee Carlsey could be the safe option for the FA after experiencing success with the U21s and having previously worked with a large number of the players within the squad.
