However, Novak Djokovic will be looking to avoid the same fate, as he targets a fourth French Open title this year. The Serbian looks good value to achieve that feat, and he also comes into this opening round clash as the defending champion.
Djokovic has been consistent at the Grand Slam throughout his career, winning 85% of the matches that he has played in. Despite that high win rate, the French Slam still sees him have his worst win rate of any Grand Slam event. He has reached at least the final of the tournament in three of the last four years, and his recent form makes him challenging to oppose on Tuesday.
Pierre Herbert will be an unranked opponent for Djokovic in the first round, but the 33-year-old will have a passionate home-town support behind him on centre court. He has been an esteemed doubles player throughout his career, completing the Grand Slam after winning titles at all events. However, he is yet to win a singles title, and is currently ranked at 140th in the world.
The clay surface is his preferred terrain, with his best showing at the French Open coming when reaching the third round in 2018. But, he failed to reach the first round proper on his previous appearance after losing in qualifying.
