The search for a new Canada national team coach has continued over the last couple of weeks, with the Canadian Soccer Association looking to name a full-time boss ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.

Mauro Biello has been in interim control since John Herdman left the position to take up the role at Toronto FC. However, there has already been knockbacks in their hunt for a new boss, with Frank Lampard turning down the opportunity last week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Emerges As Leading Contender

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the latest name to have been sounded out for the role, as the CSA look for the perfect candidate to lead Canada into their home World Cup in 2026.

The Norwegian has been out of work since being fired by Manchester United after a slow start to the 2020-21 season. Solskjaer spoke at length on the ‘Overlap’ about his future in the game, and revealed that he has been in talks surrounding the prospect of a number of teams.

Jesse Marsch is another name that has been linked with the vacant Canadian job. The former USA international has been out of work since parting company with Leeds United in December 2023.

Jose Mourinho Turns Down Role

Some huge names have been linked with the vacant position, including two-time Champions League winner Jose Mourinho. However, the former Real Madrid and Man United boss turned down the opportunity to interview for the job, instead setting his sights on a return to club soccer in Europe.

Last week, Frank Lampard also turned down the opportunity to interview for the role. The former England international admitted that he didn’t see the national team job as the ‘right’ opportunity to get back into management.
