The Men’s 800m has been an ever-present at the Olympics since the inaugural edition of the Games in 1896. David Rudisha holds the record time in the event, setting the world record of 1:40.91 at the London Games in 2012. Reigning champions have an excellent record in the 800m, with four previous champions successfully defending their title.

However, none of the top three stars from the previous edition will be back to compete for the top prize this year. Djamel Sedjati holds very solid claims this year, as he holds the third-quickest time over the distance, and was the silver medallist at the World Championships in 2022.

But, a chance could be taken on French star Gabriel Tual. The 26-year-old is the reigning European champion after landing the gold medal earlier this year in Rome. His progression could continue in front of an adoring home support in Paris.

The Women’s 800m became the first female distance event to be staged at the Olympics when it was added to the schedule in 1928. However, it didn’t make its return to the Olympic schedule on a permanent basis until 1960. The current record in the event is held by Nadiya Olizarenko, while Athing Mu is the reigning champion.

Keely Hodgkinson looks to have the most impressive credentials on paper this year. The British runner was second in the previous edition of the event in Tokyo, but her form over the last 12 months is sensational. The Brit was second at the World Championships in 2023, and arrives to the Olympics after winning gold at the European Championships earlier this year.

Compatriot Phoebe Gill could be her nearest rival for the gold medal this summer. The 17-year-old was the winner of the gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games last summer, and Gill also holds the 800m record at U17 and U18 levels.
