The drama at the Olympics this summer has already started, as Canada’s Women’s team has been reported to the International Olympic Committee. Canada are due to open their campaign for the summer on Thursday when they come up against New Zealand, but the Football Ferns have reported their rivals after finding out one of their training sessions was filmed using drones.
Canada Issue Apology Ahead of New Zealand Soccer Opener
The Canadian Olympic Committee has been forced to issue an apology ahead of their opening match in the women’s soccer competition against New Zealand on Thursday. It was found that the Canadian team had been spying on their rivals after the Football Ferns had a training session disrupted by a flying drone.
The issue in question took place on July 22 in St Etienne, with the NZOC releasing a statement on Wednesday indicating that the issue was immediately reported to the police, leading to an official of the Canadian Women’s team being detained.
Canada was quick to acknowledge their mistake and immediately set up its own investigation. The nation also apologized to its rivals in Thursday’s opening match and is awaiting the next steps from the IOC, Canada Soccer, and FIFA.
Despite the controversy, Canada’s opening match against New Zealand is still set to go ahead on Thursday. Canada are the heavy favorites at -450, while a win for the Football Ferns is priced up at +1200.
