The Men’s Javelin Throw will be one of the most competitive events in the field at the Olympics this summer. This event was first staged in 1908, and it was the last of the throwing events to be added to the Olympic schedule. Eric Lemming dominated the event in each of the first two editions, winning gold for Sweden in 1908 and 1912.

Neeraj Chopra has been the dominant figure in the sport since the previous Olympics, winning gold for India in Tokyo at the 2020 Games. The top-ranked male Javelin star continued his excellent form in the summer of last year to win the gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest.

However, we could see rare German glory in the field taking place in the event this year. Julian Weber was the European Junior champion in 2013, and he comes into the Games this year after winning the silver medal at the European Championships earlier this season.

The Women’s Javelin Throw was added to the Olympic schedule in 1932, becoming the second throwing event in the field for the female stars following the success of the inaugural discus in 1928. The current Olympic record in the event was set by Osleidys Menendez in 2004.

Liu Shiying won the gold medal in the event in Tokyo, but interestingly none of the top three stars from that competition will feature at the Olympics this summer. Haruka Kitaguchi is the dominant force in the sport coming into the competition this year, winning golds at the World Championships and Diamond League last year.

However, Mackenzie Little could be an interesting angle this year, as she boasts previous Olympic experience. She was the silver medal winner at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, and has been in solid form in the build up to the Paris Games.
