The Men’s Long Jump event has been staged at the Olympics since the first edition of the multi-sport competition. The record at the Olympics was set by Bob Beamon in 1968, while the first champion in the competition was Ellery Clark.
Mitiadis Tentoglou will be a hot favorite for the event this summer after dominating the field to win the gold medal in Tokyo at the previous Olympics. The Greek star is widely regarded as the best male long jumper in history, having won the top prize in all major World and European Championships that he has competed at.
Tentoglou’s dominance in the event makes him hard to oppose, but Carey McLeod could be his main competition in Paris. The Jamaican star was the winner of the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships earlier this season. However, it would be challenging to see him besting his Greek rival.

The Women’s Long Jump event was added 50 years after the inaugural men’s edition, with females competing in the event for the first time in 1948. It was the second jumping event for female athletes at the Olympics, with Olga Gyarmati winning the first gold medal in the competition. Jackie Joyner-Kersee holds the Olympic record, setting the distance of 7.40 meters in 1988.
Like the men’s event, the women’s competition is dominated by the reigning Olympic champion. Malaika Mihambo was the fourth female to win the gold medal in the Long Jump in 2020, and the 30-year-old also won the top prize at the recent European Championships in Rome.
However, a chance could be taken on Tara Davis-Woodhall to upset the odds. The American was the silver medal winner at the World Championships last summer, and brings previous Olympic experience to Paris after finishing sixth in Tokyo three years ago.
