One of the most famous athletics events to be staged at the Olympics this summer will come in the form of the men’s 200m sprint. There have been some famous editions of the race throughout history, with world records smashed in six races at the Olympics over this distance. But, which athlete could be crowned the winner this year?

The Men’s 200m has been competed in every Olympics since the second edition of the multi-sport event. It is widely considered to be the most prestigious of the events over the distance, with eight athletes lining up for the final in Paris this summer. The world record has been broken on six occasions in Olympic history, with Usain Bolt setting the current record of 19.30 in 2008.

A new name was added to Olympic champions in 2020 following the retirement of Bolt, with Canadian star Andre De Grasse finally finning gold to add to the silver that he had previously won in 2016. The Canadian has remained very consistent over sprint distances, winning the gold at the Diamond League over 200m in 2023.

However, there is a sense that Noah Lyles underperformed at the 2020 event, as the American was forced to settle for the bronze medal. But, his performances since then have been excellent, winning golds at the World Championships in both 2022 and 2023 over the 200m distance.

Kenny Bednarek is a second American hope in the event this year, as he bids to go one better than his second in the 2020 Games. However, there could be some emerging stars that could be set to compete for the minor honors, including Letsile Tebogo, who is progressing very quickly at the top of athletics.
