Handball at the Olympics was first contest at the event in 1936, before being dropped and later re-instated in 1972. Germany were the first winners of the gold medal in 1936, before the Soviet Union won two golds in four editions between 1976 and 1988. Romania were one of the most successful nations during the early years of the event, winning bronze medals in 1980 and 1984, and the silver medal in 1976.

It is an event that the hosts will hope to have an excellent chance of winning, with France having won the gold medal in three of the last four competitions. That includes victory at the 2020 Olympics after beating Denmark 25-23 in the final. In fact, France has made the gold medal match in every Olympics since 2008.

Denmark may be a challenging nation to overlook in the same regard after reaching the last two finals, winning their only gold in the event in 2016. Their chances of success this summer could be boosted by the fact that they were crowned world champions in 2023, beating France 34-29 in the final.

Both nations will have an early sight of the main competition, as they will lock horns in the group stage. Spain could be the interesting nation at a slighter better price, as they will have a more straightforward passage through to the latter stages. The nation won the bronze medal at the 2023 World Championship, and also finished third at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

There will be huge pressure on France to deliver the gold medal in their home event this summer. However, Denmark had their number at the World Championships last summer, and could offer more value to repeat that feat in Lille.
