The Men’s Hockey event this summer will be one of the most prestigious gold medals on the agenda, with the competition being staged at the legacy venue of the 1924 Games. This event has been staged at the Olympics since 1908, with India being the historically most successful nation after winning eight golds, one silver, and three bronze medals.

However, the competition has been more open in recent editions, with three nations having won the top prize in the last three editions. Belgium finally got their hands on the gold medal in 2020 after beating Australia in a dramatic shootout, which avenged their runner-up finish from the 2016 Games in Rio. Recent evidence suggests that they will go close again this year after reaching the final of the World Cup last year.

Germany very much looked the standout nation at the tournament last year, winning four of their seven matches, and ending the tournament as one of the highest scoring teams. Their success marked a return to the top of the hockey world, but they haven’t reached an Olympic final since beating the Netherlands in London 2012.

Australia are always a hard nation to right off in the hockey events at the Olympics, but major honors for the nation have evaded them in recent years. They could only finish fourth at the World Cup last year, losing two of their six matches. Meanwhile, they haven’t won at Olympic gold since 2004, finishing second in 2020 and third in 2008 and 2012.

This will be one of the most open events at the Summer Olympics this year, but a strong case could be made for Germany to emerge as the leading nation once again. The country was excellent at the World Cup last year, and it looks good value to build on that in Paris.
