The inaugural event saw history made, as Fiji won their first ever gold medal at the Olympics. That success was quickly followed up in Japan with a second straight gold in the sevens in Tokyo, beating New Zealand in a gripping final. South Africa and Argentina have also won medals, but both were bronzes in the 2016 and 2020 Games, respectively.
This year’s sevens event will be staged at the Stade de France, with 288 competitors competing for 15 nations across the men’s and women’s tournaments. Argentina will rank among a popular nation to land success this summer after performing well in the World Sevens Series.
However, Fiji could stand the obvious claims after winning that tournament to continue their domination. The USA aren’t without their chances after finishing eleventh that tournament, while Southern Hemisphere nations such as Australia and New Zealand are always impossible to rule out.
