The Olympics is all about learning about and watching new sports, and one of the most exciting new sports added to the program in the previous edition came in the form of surfing. But, which nations will be among the leading contenders to be the winning country in the men’s event this year?

Surfing at the Summer Olympics was formally included back in 2016, with the inaugural gold medal being competed at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. The inclusion of the sport has needed to overcome a number of barriers to gain IOC recognition, including the fact that the sport may be difficult to compete in a landlocked country.

However, the sport at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo was a major success, with two events attracting over 40 competitors from 17 different nations. Tsurigasaki Beach hosted the first edition of the competition in Tokyo, with the two best scores from each competitor being taken into account.

While there was American success in the women’s event, with Carissa Moore winning the gold medal, the male tournament would be dominated by Brazilian superstar Italo Ferreira. After scoring the highest score in the first heat, Ferreira would comfortably make it through the knockout rounds before beating Japanese star Kanoa Igarashi in the final.

The USA will be hopeful of building on their success in the woman’s category this summer with a success in the men’s event. Two American stars both made it through to the third round in 2020, before they were forced to collide in the opening round of the knockouts. Kolohe Andino made it through the All-American clash before being eliminated by the eventual runner-up.

Brazilian stars were dominant in the Japanese waters in 2020, and that looks set to continue in Paris. Italo Ferreira looks a hot favorite to successfully defend his Olympic honor, and his biggest rival could come in the form of compatriot Gabriel Medina.
