The 2024 Olympics will see a number of niche sports contested, but few are as hard-hitting as the men’s water polo. The Paris Aquatic Centre and Paris La Defense Arena will both host matches during the tournament, with the latter being the location where the gold medals will be handed out to the winning country.

The Men’s Water Polo competition at this summer’s Olympics will get underway on July 27, before the gold medal match will be contested in the French capital on August 11. A total of 12 teams will be in contention for the top prize, with the teams involved being drawn into two groups of six. Only the top four nations from each heat will make it through to the knockout stage.

The men’s competition has been included at the Olympics since 1900, with the inaugural edition taking place in France. Great Britain dominated the early competitions, winning the tournaments in 1900, 1908, 1912, and 1920. However, recent history has shown that Hungary could be very challenging to overlook.

Hungary have won three of the last six editions of the event, and they were crowned bronze medallists at the 2020 Games. A new wave of talent has emerged for the Hungarian team, and that was highlighted after winning the World Championships in 2023 for the first time since 2013.

Greece were the surprise package at the World Championships last summer, and they could be in with a chance of another run to the latter stages this year. Spain finished third at the global event last year, which came after finishing fourth at the Olympics in 2020. Croatia could also be hard to overlook after finishing second at the 2016 Olympics.
