The men’s modern pentathlon has been staged in various forms since the 1912 Games, with the events made up in the competition changing on a number of occasions. Hungarian athletes have dominated this event throughout history, winning the top prize on nine occasions, as well as claiming eight silvers and six bronze medals.

However, there was a rare double in the men’s and women’s events for Great Britain in 2020, with Joe Choong winning the gold in the male competition. Ahmed Elgendy finished with the silver medal, and he could be a value play to go one better in 2024.

But, Hungarian stars dominate the betting at this stage, and it could be challenging to overlook the prospect of Csaba Bohm winning gold. The Hungarian star comes into the competition as the reigning world champion.

The Women’s Modern Pentathlon was added to the Olympic schedule at a later date compared to the men’s competition, with females competing for individual gold in the event since the 2000 Games. But, it has been a welcome addition to the Olympic program in recent memory.

Like the male event, there was British success in the competition in Tokyo, with Kate French winning the gold medal. However, it could be worth noting that none of the medallists from the previous Olympics rank among the leading contenders to win the gold medal in France this summer.

Blanka Guzi could be a prominent selection this year to complete a memorable Hungarian double in the men’s and women’s events. The 25-year-old was part of the World Championship-winning team earlier this season and was the silver medallist in the individual event.
