The Women’s 100m Backstroke has been included on the Olympic program since the 1924 Games, with Australian star Kaylee McKeown dominating both backstroke events at the previous Games. She set a new Olympic record time in the 100m competition, and she once again looks to be the star to beat.

Kylie Masse was one of the top Canadian pool athletes in the previous edition of the Olympics, winning silvers in both backstroke competitions. However, questions surrounding her recent form mean that McKeown has more pressing competitors this year.

Regan Smith would be at the head of those after winning bronze in the 2020 Games. The American landed World Championship success in the event in 2022, but was the silver medal winner in the previous edition last year. Therefore, the narrow preference remains for McKeown.

The second of the women’s backstroke golds will be handed out later in the summer, but a tense final is once again expected. This event has been included on the Olympic program since 1968, and there will be a very familiar feel to the betting when compared to the 100m event.

Kaylee McKeown is even more dominant over the 200m distance, winning World Championship gold over the distance in both 2022 and 2023. She is a three-time Olympic champion already, and her dominance in the pool already ensures that she holds world record times over the 100m and 200m distances.

Regan Smith will at least ensure that McKeown will be kept up to her work in the pool for the 200m event. The American won silver in the 200m Butterfly at the previous Games, and was a bronze medal winner in the 100m backstroke. She has proven ability over this distance, being the closest contender to McKeown at the World Championships earlier this year.
