The Men’s 400m Individual Medley has been regularly contested at the Olympics since the 1964 edition of the Games. Competitors in the event this year will need to make it through a round of heats to book a spot in the final, with the best eight times from the semi-finals making it through to the showdown for the gold medal.

Leon Marchand heads the betting to win the gold medal this year for France, but he will need to avenge his sixth-place finish in the race in Tokyo. However, his form since that disappointment has been excellent, winning three gold medals at the World Championships last summer, including in the 400m Medley.

Carson Foster was second behind the world-record setting Frenchman at the World Championships, but that leaves him with a lot to find just 12 months later. Daiya Seto was back in third in the World Championship final, but was over five seconds slower than the winning Marchand.

Max Litchfield didn’t compete in the World Championships last year, and the British star could be an interesting dark horse contender. The 29-year-old was the silver medal winner at the World Championships in Doha earlier this year, and was a former European champion over the distance in 2019.

The odds highlight that Marchand is the competitor to beat in the event this year. The Frenchman brings excellent form into his home Games, and we struggle to overlook the current holder of the world record in the 400m Individual Medley.
