One of the most open races in the pool this summer looks set to come in the form of the Men’s 50m Freestyle. Caeleb Dressel enjoyed a dominant Games in Tokyo in 2021, and he was a deserving winner of the event, beating the field by a margin of 0.48 seconds.

The success gave Dressel a seventh Olympic title, and he has now won 31 golds across all major swimming competitions. He has won the gold medal in the event in his last two appearances at the World Championships, but didn’t compete in the 2022 competition due to taking a break from competition.

Cameron McEvoy has fallen short of his Olympic goals in the event in three previous appearances, but he arrives in Paris in his best form. He was crowned world champion in the event in Fukuoka last year, and looks set to finally get his hands on a coveted Olympic gold medal.

The Women’s 50m Freestyle may be one of the few events in the pool this summer that doesn’t go to either the USA or Australia. There was success for the latter of those nations in Tokyo, with Emma McKeano continuing her dominant to win the gold medal in the closing stages.

However, Swedish star Sarah Sjostrom could be set to better the silver medal that she won in Japan. It is worth remembering that she had recovered from elbow surgery just months before taking the silver medal, and she retains the world record time in the competition.

Katarzyna Wasick could be her major competition this year, as the fastest swimmer in Poland comes into the Olympics after winning bronze at the World Championships in 2024. However, Sjostrom was able to claim success in an impressive manner in that event in Doha, and history could repeat itself in Paris.
