The Women’s 200m will be one of the most exciting events at the Summer Olympics in Paris this year. A star-studded field is set to line up, and chances can be given for many of the athletes that are set to line up. But, who will be crowned the gold medal winner in Paris this summer?

The Women’s 200m sprint has been held at the Olympics since 1948, and it has helped create some of the defining moments from the Games throughout recent history. The world record in the event was set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988, but that record was nearly broken in Tokyo, with Elaine Thompson-Herah finishing just behind that time despite having the slowest reaction time in the final.

Gabrielle Thomas will have American hopes on her shoulders this weekend, as the American looks to win a second Olympic medal in the event. She was third in the race in Tokyo, before adding a silver in the 4 x 100m relay. Her road to the Olympics has been full of turbulence, including in 2021, when she had a health scare. She is a leading contender based on her career-best time of 21.60 from last year over the 200m distance.

Dina Asher-Smith has already made history during her career after becoming the first British woman to win a sprint event. Her progression to the top of the sport has been well documented, and she holds the national records over both the 100m and 200m distances. She comes into the Olympics this year in excellent form after winning the gold medal at the European Championships in the 100m earlier this year.

One of the most exciting contenders for the gold medal this summer is Julien Alfred. The Saint Lucian athlete won the gold medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships over 60m earlier this year, and has also won the silver medal over 100m at the Commonwealth Games.
