Baltimore Running Out of Time

By all accounts it’s been a great resurgent year for the 80-74 Baltimore Orioles, who were 52-110 a season ago. Unless something changes in the last 8 games of the year though it looks like Baltimore is just going miss out on a postseason berth. The O’s are currently 3.5 GB of Seattle and also have series’ with the Yankees and Blue Jays to close out the year.

All Boston can do in the Orioles vs Red Sox Wednesday matchup is play the spoiler role, something they did on Tuesday with a 13-9 victory. Prior to that it had looked like Boston was shutting it down for the season as they had lost their last six in a row. Even with a good series the Red Sox are doomed to finish in the basement of the AL East this season.

Baltimore hopes to keep their faint playoff hopes alive behind Dean Kremer (8-5, 3.07 ERA) who dazzled in his last outing in a complete game shutout of Houston. Kremer has allowed 2 ER or less in 4 of his 5 starts this month and he’s posted 2-1, 2.61 splits in September.

Perhaps the biggest goal of the Orioles Red Sox Wednesday starter for Boston Rich Hill (7-7, 4.65 ERA) is to get out – or pitch around – Baltimore’s Anthony Santander. Santander has hit 6 HRs in his last 4 games, but he’s also 1-7 in his career against Hill, with the Boston left-hander being just 1-2 with a 5.96 ERA this month.
