Patrick Mahomes, arguably the best player in the NFL, reached an agreement with his Kansas City Chiefs about a 10-year extension.

Mahomes Breaks All the Records

The Chiefs’ quarterback will stay in Kansas City in the next 12 years after today’s agreement. Allegedly, the two sides have worked out a deal that would keep Mahomes at the Arrowhead stadium for the next 12 seasons.

He has two more years on his rookie contract, and on top of that, Chiefs offered him a 10-year extension, which he accepted. The reigning NFL champs picked up his fifth-year option, and right now, he has one more year on his rookie contract before that fifth season.

Mahomes is set to earn $2.8 million this season, and after that, $24.8 million in that fifth-season. According to the various sources, he will get more than $450 million over that 10 years, which is the highest sum for any of the professional athletes in the USA.

The previous record was between the Los Angeles Angels and Mike Trout, who had a 12-year deal worth $426.5 million. Yet, the most important distinction, in this case, was the guaranteed sum. In Trout’s situation, the entire amount are safe, while on the other side, with Mahomes, $140 million are guaranteed for the player.

It is pretty reasonable why the Chiefs didn’t want to wait to extend their deal with Mahomes. He is arguably one of the best players in the league, and a definite game0changer for the franchise from Missouri. Before him, the team from the Arrowhead stadium was very good, and among the better ones in the league, but they weren’t in any of the Super Bowl’s talks.

Even though, Chiefs had Alex Smith and Andy Ried, they weren’t considered as the Super Bowl-caliber crew. Yet, all that changed once Smith got traded to the Redskins, and Mahomes took over as the starting QB. Since then we saw a meteoric rise of this organization, who reached the AFC championship game last year, and won the SB this season, after defeating the San Francisco 49ers in the finals.

Mahomes and the Numbers

The 2018 NFL MVP became the first player to throw 5,000 yards in college and the NFL. Apart from that, he would win the MVP award in the first season as the QB. Some minor formalities prevented him from becoming the rookie who won the most valuable player award, because he debuted the year before even though he didn’t play any significant role in Chiefs’ performances.

Mahomes was selected as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, coming out of Texas Tech University. He would impress all the scouts with a strong hand and mental stability, and eventually, the Chiefs seized the opportunity to land him.

In his first year as a starter, Mahomes had 50 TD passes and 12 picks, for 5,097 yards and two more rushing TDs and 272 yards on the ground. During this season he posted 4,031 yards, 26 TDs and only five interceptions in 14 matches, plus 218 rushing yards and two TDs on the ground.
