Patrick Mahomes did not have a vintage day at the office but the Kansas City Chiefs were still able to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Streak Ends at 14 for Patrick Mahomes
Reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes had his first tough day of the season. At times, it appears that Mahomes and the Chiefs offense can’t be stopped. They faced off against the Detroit Lions and head coach Matt Patricia. The former Patriots defensive coordinator had a game plan that was able to keep Mahomes out of the end zone for only the fourth time in his career.
It should also be a worrying sign for the rest of the NFL that even though Mahomes had no touchdowns, his team still scored 34 points. The three touchdown came from their running backs. Two from Darrel Williams and one from LeSean McCoy.
Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes Left It Late
The Chiefs played from behind for most of the game which is unusual for them. They were down 10-0 in the first quarter but did manage to tie the score at 13 a piece by halftime. The second half was a back and forth affair with the Lions taking the lead in the final minutes. With 2:26 left to play, Matthew Stafford threw a touchdown pass to give the Lions a 30-27 lead. It looked like it would be up to Patrick Mahomes to bail his team out which he helped do.
On 4th and 8 from his own 34, Mahomes ran for 15 yards and a first down. He then made a few crucial throws to put his team in position to win the game at the end. While he will be disappointed to not have thrown a touchdown, it has to be a big relief to know that he doesn’t have to be perfect for the Chiefs to win. By his standards, 24 for 42 is not a good day at the office. HIs defense still isn’t doing him any favors by allowing 30 points but the Chiefs are definitely the real deal.
Mahomes Streak Ends at 14 Games
The NFL record for most games with at least two touchdown passes is 15 set by Peyton Manning. Patrick Mahomes had accomplished the feat in 14 games in a row until today. As young as he is it is possible for him to still break that record but it won’t be easy. Luckily for the Chiefs Mahomes doesn’t appears to concerned with offensive records. His style of play plus the Chiefs offense means he will always have impressive stats.
For Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and this veteran group, it’s about winning the Super Bowl. In order to do that, they will need to keep pace with the New England Patriots. Last year the Chiefs had home field advantage and it still wasn’t enough to beat the Patriots. They will not want to have to get to the Super Bowl having to win in Foxboro in January. For that reason, Mahomes should be happy that his team can find different ways to get a win.
