Philadelphia in the Wild Card Battle
It would seem like a great opportunity for Philadelphia to add to their 1.5 game lead over Milwaukee in the wild card matchup heading into the Phillies vs Cubs Tuesday series opener. Philadelphia is kind of stumbling down the stretch with a 3-7 mark over their last 10, but 8 of those games have come against Atlanta and Toronto who are both playoff teams.
Chicago is not going to the postseason, officially eliminated weeks ago as they are just 67-86 on the season. The Cubs did pick up a three game sweep in Philadelphia in July though, including 6-2 in the Marcus Stroman vs. Zack Wheeler pitching matchup that will be a rematch in the series opener.
Wheeler (11-7, 2.98 ERA) gave up just 3 hits and a Nico Hoerner solo home run in the first meeting with Chicago, but it was the Philadelphia bullpen that imploded allowing 4 runs in the 10th as the Cubs got the 6-2 win. Recently he pitched shut out the Blue Jays in his most recent start, but pitched just 4 innings as he was making his return from the I.L. with right elbow inflammation.
The Cubs have won 4 of their last 5 as Stroman (4-7, 3.80 ERA) tries to continue that stretch of strong play. Chicago has won consecutive Stroman starts as he has posted a 3.00 ERA in four outings this month. Stroman is just 1-5 with a 6.31 ERA at Wrigley Field this season.
