The postseason march continues for both Philadelphia and San Diego as they meet up in the Phillies Padres Game 1 matchup on Tuesday night. Despite struggling down the stretch in the regular season, Philadelphia has gotten hot in the playoffs, taking out the Cardinals in two games and eliminating the defending champion Braves in the NLDS.
The Padres definitely haven’t had an easy path to get to the NLCS. They had to get through Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and the Mets in the wild card round before knocking out the 111-win Dodgers last round. San Diego made some huge acquisitions at the trade deadline going all-in for this season, and they seem to be paying off.
Yu Darvish (16-8, 3.10 ERA) tries to give San Diego the early advantage when he takes the mound on Tuesday night. He gave up 3HR to the Dodgers last Wednesday, but was saved by his offense in a 5-3 win. Darvish was 7-3 with a 2.60 ERA at home this season. The Phillies as a team hit .209 against Darvish, with Bryce Harper going 1-6 vs. the San Diego starter.
Philadelphia counters with Zack Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) who shut out St. Louis in the wild card round but was tagged for 3 runs over 6-0 in Philly’s lone loss to the Braves in the NLDS. San Diego’s Josh Bell has hit 8-26 with a couple of HRs vs. Wheeler and Juan Soto is 11-38 with a couple HRs.
