The opening legs in the round of 16 in the Champions League continue on Wednesday, as Arsenal bid to take an advantage back to North London when they travel to Portugal to take on FC Porto.

A competitive first leg between Arsenal and Porto is set for Wednesday, with the Gunners heavily favored to progress through to the next round over the two matches with their Portuguese rivals. The home side on Wednesday have been knocked out in seven of their eight ties against English opposition in the Champions League. Their only victory was recorded against Man United on their way to winning the European Cup in 2003-04.
Arsenal’s record against Porto is incredibly strong after winning three of their six matches against the Portuguese side. However, all wins that they have recorded have come in home matches. Therefore, they are winless in three away matches against Porto.
Interestingly, Arsenal overcame Porto in their latest win in the round of 16, claiming a 6-2 aggregate success against their Portuguese opponents. However, the Gunners have exited the competition at this stage more frequently than any other team since the introduction of the round of 16 in 2003-04.
Porto have suffered the second-most eliminations, after being knocked out on eight occasions in the round of 16. It could be a good omen for the Gunners that the last five teams to knock Porto out of the competition in the knockout rounds have gone on to reach at least the final.
