The end of the Premier League season is fast approaching, and this weekend could be a pivotal one in the battles at both ends of the league standings. Liverpool and Manchester City endured contrasting results in the Champions League in midweek, but the attention switches back to the title race this weekend.
Pressure On City & Liverpool
Liverpool will have the opportunity to move back to the top of the Premier League standings before Manchester City kick off this weekend, as they play on Saturday evening against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds have a fine record in this fixture, as they have lost just once in 27 league home fixtures against Spurs. However, Liverpool will be wary, as Tottenham have already beaten Manchester City home and away this season.
However, Spurs have a poor record in this fixture overall, as they have won just once in their last 18 games against Liverpool. Goals could be on the agenda this weekend though, as this fixture is the second-highest fixture in Premier League history. The Reds home record could be key this weekend, and I could see them winning with both teams finding the net.
City will have the opportunity to respond on Sunday, as they welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad. It was a damaging week for Pep Guardiola and his side, as they squandered a lead in their semi-final second leg against Real Madrid, as they conceded twice in the final five minutes. They were eventually knocked out in extra time.
However, their record in this fixture has been incredibly strong throughout the history of the Premier League, as they have lost just once in 28 league fixtures against the Magpies. Meanwhile, Newcastle are yet to win at the Etihad, and have picked up just two draws from the 16 league visits. A home win looks the most likely outcome.
Big Weekend At Bottom
It could be a massive weekend at the bottom of the Premier League, with 18th-placed Everton sitting two points behind 16th-placed Burnley, with Leeds United sandwiched in the middle. Burnley play first this weekend, as they host Aston Villa on Saturday. Villa have a poor away record in this fixture, as they have picked up just one win in the last 26 visits to Turf Moor. A fourth straight win for Burnley could be the outcome.
Everton and Leeds both kick off on Sunday, with the Toffees travelling to Leicester. Everton could be the strong play here, given that the Foxes have been in poor recent form and will kick off on Sunday just days after their exertions in Europe against Roma. However, 48% of the Premier League fixtures between these sides have ended in draws, and that could be the best bet.
Leeds United face a big couple of days, as they face Arsenal before a fixture against Chelsea. Defeats in both could see them head into next weekend in the relegation places. Arsenal have an excellent record in this fixture, as they are unbeaten in the previous eleven. Leeds United’s last win in all competitions came with a 3-2 win at Highbury back in 2003. The Whites have a poor defensive record, as they haven’t kept a clean sheet in 12, and that means an Arsenal win looks the best play.
