The final day of the Premier League season is fast approaching. However, in between Premier League round 37 and the closing day, there are some midweek fixtures as teams catch up on games. However, which sides could pick up maximum points in the mid-week round?
Liverpool Must Win
Liverpool face a must-win game on the road against Southampton on Tuesday evening. Defeat will see their title challenge fall short of reaching the final day, as Manchester City currently hold a four-point advantage over the Reds. A draw also isn’t likely to be enough, as the Reds would be three points behind, but with an inferior goal difference.
Southampton should be confident coming into this fixture, as they won this exact match 1-0 last season. However, they haven’t won back-to-back home games against Liverpool since between March 2004 and March 2013. The Reds also have an extremely effective record in this fixture, as they have won eight of their last nine against Southampton, and they have scored at least twice in each win recorded. It would be hard to bet against Liverpool in midweek, and we would be keen to take the spread selection.
Massive Game For Burnley
There is also a massive game at the bottom of the standings on Thursday evening, as Burnley will look to drag themselves out of the bottom three before the final day of the season. The Clarets come up against Aston Villa for the second time this month, and they will be hoping for better after suffering a 3-1 defeat in the reverse fixture.
Burnley need just a point to move up to 17th and pile the pressure on Leeds United in midweek. Aston Villa will be looking for a piece of history themselves, as they haven’t recorded a league double against the Clarets since the 1925-26 season. The Clarets also have a pretty decent record on the road against the Villa, as they have lost just once in their previous seven visits to Villa Park.
Villa also have a poor record in midweek fixtures, as they are winless in their last seven Premier League fixtures played in midweek. This is a pivotal game in Burnley’s season, and a chance could be taken on them getting a draw.
Everton Need Win To Secure Status
Everton will have a second opportunity to assure their Premier League status for next season. The Toffees need just one more win to ensure that they will be playing in the English top-flight next season. They squandered their previous opportunity, as they blew a 2-1 lead against Brentford on Sunday to lose 3-2 at Goodison Park.
They come up against Crystal Palace on Thursday. Everton has a strong record in this fixture, as they have been beaten on just one occasion in the previous 14 meetings between the sides.
However, that defeat did come in the previous match between the sides this season. Palace also dumped Everton out of the FA Cup earlier in the season. Regardless, the Toffees home record has been decent recently, and we could see them ensuring their safety with a narrow win at Goodison Park.
