Chelsea vs Liverpool Preview

These two sides both got their 2020-21 campaigns up and running with wins on the opening day. However, neither were totally ruthless in their fixtures. Liverpool managed to get past Leeds United in a Premier League classic to kickstart their season. Jurgen Klopp’s side needed a late penalty to secure the win, as Mohamed Salah wrapped up the three points from 12 yards.

The Premier League champions made a number of defensive mistakes in that fixture, which allowed Leeds to score three goals. Their defensive performance was highlighted by a poor mistake from Virgil van Dijk, who allowed Patrick Bamford to latch on to a loose touch to make it 2-2 after half an hour. However, Salah gave the Reds their lead back before half time. The newly promoted visitors weren’t about to give up in the second half, and deservedly pulled level with 25 minutes remaining through Mateusz Klich. However, Salah ensured the champions started with three points with just two minutes remaining.

There was a great deal of excitement around Chelsea heading into their opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, as Frank Lampard has spent big over the summer to bring in a host of top names. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both made their debuts at the AMEX Stadium. Werner immediately made his presence felt as he won the penalty that allowed Jorginho to open the scoring. Brighton were brilliant throughout, and levelled the scores through Leandro Trossard. However, the Blues stepped it up a gear in the final half an hour, and scored two more goals. The first was a rocket scored by Reece James, before Kurt Zouma put the game out of reach.

This will be a much tighter affair, with Chelsea keen to show that they can compete with the leading sides in the division this term. But, will they be able to claim a big three points against Liverpool?

Chelsea vs Liverpool Picks

This should be an exciting game between the two sides this weekend, with both Liverpool and Chelsea having exceptional quality in the final third of the pitch. However, it is hard to call a winner, which means the best bet could be for over 2.5 goals.
