Wild Card Coming Into Picture for Seattle

The Mariners are somewhat salvaging a great opportunity to solidify their wild card spot, falling 13-12 to Kansas City on Sunday and then dropping the opener against Texas 5-0 on Tuesday. Seattle righted the ship with a 3-1 over the Rangers on Tuesday though and still have a solid 4.5 game lead over Baltimore for the final wild card spot so clinching a spot in the postseason is inevitable.

The fact that Seattle is in the playoffs nearly win or lose makes Thursday’s game hard to handicap. The Mariners likely want to get that final win to officially be in the playoffs, but they’ve got seven games at home coming up with last place Oakland and Detroit to finish out the year so the M’s are looking good.

Jon Gray (7-7, 3.64 ERA) makes his penultimate start of the season for Texas. The Rangers have lost five straight Gray starts so he’s a guy to fade here.

Marco Gonzales (10-15, 4.05 ERA) gets the ball for Seattle trying to bounce out of an 0-3, 4.44 ERA month. Gonzales had a 5.08 ERA despite going 4-2 in August so he’ll give up some runs.

Rangers vs Mariners Thursday Summary

The only way to play this game is the ‘over’. Seattle will likely get a big win, but with Gray and Gonzales going through their struggles right now the offenses should strive – and it’s a low number.
