Red Bull Leipzig won on the road against FC Koln with 4-2, coming back to the Champions League zone. Once again, they posted a better result away from home.
Bulls Strong on The Road as Usual
In the last game of Bundesliga’s 29th round, RB Leipzig took all three points in Koln against the hosts. The final result was 4-2 for the team from East Germany, who erased a slip in the previous round against Hertha and came back to the top four places in the championship.
This was another excellent performance of Julian Nagelsmann’s boys, who didn’t open the game well enough, but convincingly ended the same. The Bulls were superior in certain moments, and they seemed comfortable throughout the entire match.
Cordoba opened the show in the seventh minute, scoring the opener for the home team. After one shot, the ball deflected off the post, and Koln’s player just ran onto it, hitting the back of the net.
It was the 20th minute when Bulls equalized. Patrick Schick scored his ninth goal in 18 matches for Red Bull, changing the tide on the field. Nkunku brought the lead to the other side, in the 38th minute. He would reach a one-on-one situation with Koln’s goalkeeper Horn, and routinely execute.
When the second half started, the guests from Leipzig made a blitzkrieg that saw them scoring twice in the span of seven minutes.
Timo Werner once again showed why half of Europe wants him. He was alone in the counter-attack and didn’t have any problems in scoring. That was 1-3 for RB, and just seven minutes later, Dani Olmo’s rocket from the edge of the box finished behind Horn for 2-4.
In between, Modeste added one goal for hosts.
Tight Race for the Champions League
Four teams are bidding for three spots, which lead to the Champions League. Red Bull now has 58 points and is third in the standings. That is two fewer than Borussia Dortmund in second place, and two more than Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen.
The situation here is going to be very interesting, because all these teams want to participate in the most prominent soccer competition in Europe, but one of them will have to settle with the Europa League.
Except for the match against Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull doesn’t have some tough opponents. The Millionaires are coming to Leipzig, and that should be a slight advantage to the home team. In the next round, they await the last-placed Paderborn, then go to Hoffenheim before meeting with Fortuna, who is fighting to survive. After that comes Dortmund and, in the last game of the season, a road trip to Augsburg.
On the other side, Koln plays with Augsburg on the road in the next round, then hosts Union Berlin in a very important contest. Billy Goats then travel to Leverkusen, before coming back home and awaiting Eintracht. The last event is in Bremen against Werder who is below the red line.
