The Seahawks have jumped out to a surprising 3-0 start. They are facing their first difficult challenge as they travel to Detroit to play the championship-contending Lions.

Lions Strive to Gain Offensive Footing
The Lions (2-1) are trying to make the leap to the Super Bowl after losing in the NFC Championship Game to the 49ers last season. The loss was largely due to head coach Dan Campbell’s overaggressiveness in trying to convert a 4th down while in field goal range and not trusting his kicker Michael Badgley to hit from beyond 45 yards. Badgley was injured before the season and replaced by Jake Bates. Bates showed a booming leg in the UFL.
The Lions offense has yet to hit on all cylinders in 2024, but quarterback Jared Goff has extensive firepower with running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, and tight end Sam LaPorta. LaPorta is dealing with an ankle injury but was a full participant in practice.
Seahawks Schedule Has Been Weak
The Seahawks are transitioning to a new era with Mike Macdonald replacing longtime head coach Pete Carroll. Seattle has gotten off to a fast start at 3-0 with a top-level defense leading the NFL in fewest passing yards allowed. They are 6th in fewest rushing yards.
Still, two of their wins have come against two of the weaker teams in the league, the Broncos and Patriots. The third was against the Dolphins who are reeling from the loss of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has been solid but not spectacular.
Given these factors and that Seattle has yet to play a team the caliber of the Lions — and the game is in Detroit — the point spread of the Lions favored by 4 seems woefully short.
