Back-to-back wins came at the perfect moment for the Sounders. They need points to remain among the top seven teams in the West and maybe even earn a home-field edge in the playoffs.

The good news for Brian Schmetzer is that his defense woke up, posting consecutive clean sheets. After an impressive victory in Columbus, 0-4, the Sounders were better than SKC at home, 2-0.

The downside for Seattle is that the experienced goalkeeper Stefan Frei will probably skip this event.

San Jose’s injury troubles are much, much worse. They won’t have at least six players available for the upcoming event, which is a catastrophe for an already battered unit.

The Quakes had one win after the League Cup, 0-2 against Real Salt Lake. Yet, San Jose’s following two events ended badly: a loss at home to Minnesota, 1-2, and a loss on the road in Vancouver, 2-0.

We can’t quite tell what happened with this team. From one average unit, they fell apart and now endure a terrible season.
