The winner of four Fight of the Night bonuses in the UFC, Shane Burgos, is looking for his first-ever win in the lightweight division this Friday when he’s locking horns with 20-year-old Japanese fighter Yamato Nishikawa in PFL 6.

Before Betting on Shane Burgos vs. Yamato Nishikawa

Each fighter is at zero points ahead of the final 2023 PFL regular-season event. Shane Burgos lost to last year’s million-dollar-winner Olivier Aubin-Mercier in what was Burgos’s promotional debut, as well as his first-ever fight in the lightweight division. The reason why Yamato Nishikawa has no points in the 2023 season is that he lost to Clay Collard by a unanimous decision on his PFL debut.

Before signing with the Professional Fighters League, Nishikawa fought in Shooto, as well as many other local promotions in Japan. What’s interesting about this guy is that even though he’s just 20, he’s already fought 31 professional fights. In comparison, Burgos, who’s 12 years his senior, has fought 19 professional bouts so far.

Nishikawa’s pro career started in early 2006 when he was only 13, while his first amateur MMA fight happened three years earlier. There’s no doubt that he’s got a bright future ahead of him, but there’s a big question mark over whether Nishikawa can win against such an elite fighter as Burgos.

This really is a fight Burgos must win. He’s just levels above Nishikawa, which is why it’s understandable that his PFL 6 2023 odds are -650. We’re almost 100% certain he’s going to win on June 23, but simply winning might not be good enough for him. It has everything to do with the PFL tournament rules.

There are five fighters with 3 points in the 2023 PFL lightweight tournament. Considering that only four fighters will advance to the playoffs, it might not be enough for Shane Burgos to beat Nishikawa in round 3 or by points. Instead, he needs an early win – a round 1 finish would bring 6 points his way, which should be enough for a place in the playoffs.
