Newcastle United have enjoyed an excellent season to this point, but they will likely be targeting a domestic cup success to get their new era off to a perfect start. The FA Cup could be their best chance to achieve that, and they face a sticky challenge on Saturday, as they travel to League One high-flyers Sheffield Wednesday.

Before Betting On Sheffield Wednesday vs Newcastle

Newcastle have been one of the stories of the season in English football, and the job that Eddie Howe has done to this point can’t be downplayed. The Magpies remain in the hunt for a place in the Champions League spots this term, and could yet end the season with a much-needed piece of silverware.

However, the FA Cup hasn’t been a welcome distraction for Newcastle throughout history, as they have won just two of their previous 16 ties in the third round. In fact, they have needed a replay in five of the seven occasions in which they have progressed through to the fourth round. It is also the second season running that the Magpies will come up against League One opposition. However, last season they were beaten in this round by Cambridge United.

Sheffield Wednesday are enjoying an excellent campaign in England’s third tier, as they are currently second in League One, and just four points off top spot. The FA Cup may not be the distraction that they were hoping for at this stage of the season. Their record against top-flight teams in the competition is fairly weak, as their only win in 18 attempts came in the 2019-20 season against Brighton.

Wednesday have clashed with Newcastle on six previous occasions in the FA Cup, but they have been eliminated on five previous occasions. Their only win over Newcastle came in the 1965-66 season, as they reached the FA Cup final before being beaten by Everton.

This is a tricky test for Newcastle, as Sheffield Wednesday have been playing excellent football throughout the season. However, the confidence is flowing through this Newcastle side, and I would be extremely surprised to see them exit the competition at this early stage for the second season running.
