Stefon Diggs isn’t happy with his role on the Minnesota Vikings and he missed practice with a non football injury fueling trade speculation.
Stefon Diggs Not Happy with Role
With this latest Stefon Diggs drama, it seems like the Minnesota Vikings have a lot of unhappy wide receivers. First Adam Thielen spoke out and now Stefon Diggs seems like he’s unhappy with his situation in Minnesota. Nobody on the Vikings seems like they’re in the mood to talk with offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski not answering questions bout Diggs’ availability.
When asked if Diggs’ would play Sunday Stefanski said “we’ll see how it goes.” Despite his frustration, it doesn’t appear like Diggs’ will be going anywhere. He signed an extension with the team in July of 2018 and the team has no intention of trading him.
Diggs’ Did Not Ask for Trade but Is Frustrated
While he confirmed that he did not ask to be traded, Stefon Diggs chose to not end speculation by saying that “there’s truth to all rumors”. This is something that has been brewing beneath the surface with this team. The Vikings have gone from a team that relied on their passing game to a run heavy team. That change has seen Diggs’ opportunities become more limited. Few targets mean fewer opportunities to make catches. He isn’t the only one that’s frustrated.
Adam Thielen’s comments are very direct and although some thought he was talking about Kirk Cousins; it could also be the play calling. If you have two of the best wide receivers in the NFL, you should be putting in position to make plays. If both of them get frustrated to the point that they feel the need to speak out, it might be time to listen. While running the running back position has been devalued in recent years, very few teams have two wide receivers the calibre of Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
What Happens Next for the Vikings
The only way to fix this situation for the Vikings is to start winning again. Both Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs would be less likely to complain if the current game plan was working. As long as the they keep losing games the pressure will mount on the coaching staff.
That’s the part that’s strange about what’s going on. The is more of a chance that the coaches go than the two star wide receivers. With that in mind, if the losing continues, something will have to change. It’s too early too get into coaching changes but two of your best players complaining about the way you play is not going to play well with fans.
If they’re playing the blame game, they are more likely to side with players that are proven stars. They can’t produce if they aren’t given the opportunity to do so. The new offensive philosophy is under threat if it can’t turn things around. The fact that Steffon Diggs has joined Thielen in voicing his displeasure means the clock is officially ticking on the current coaching staff to get this right or somebody’s going to go.
