Sweden has long-been one of the most consistent nations in the women’s game, but they are still chasing a World Cup success. There is limited chance that this will be their year, but they will look to get off to the dream start in Group G when they take on South Africa in Wellington on Sunday.
Before Betting On Sweden vs South Africa
It appears fair to suggest that Group G looks to be the most open World Cup group, with all four teams likely to have a fair chance of reaching the knockout round. However, Sweden looks the standout nation in the race to top the standings, as the nation has consistently impressed at the World Cup without being able to actually win the tournament. The Swedes have reached the semi-final stage on four previous occasions, and have concluded the World Cup finishing third in two of the previous three tournaments.
That includes in the 2019 World Cup, as they beat England in the match for third. Their consistency in major tournaments has also been evident in the EUROs, as they reached the semi-finals at EURO 2022, before being dismantled by England. Their form this year has been solid enough, as they have lost just once from five internationals. However, they have struggled against nations ranked in the top ten, evident from losses against Australia and Denmark.
South Africa previously qualified for the 2019 World Cup, which was its debut showing at the major tournament. However, they crashed out in the group stage after falling to three successive defeats. They scored just once in three matches, and allowed eight goals in fixtures against Spain, China, and Germany.
The nation comes into the tournament after limited success in their warm-up fixtures, as they were hammered 5-0 by Botswana, and suffered a 3-2 defeat against Serbia. However, they were able to land a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in their final warm-up match before the tournament. But, this is a very difficult challenge compared to the ones that they have faced this year so far.
Sweden vs South Africa Offshore Odds & Pick
This doesn’t appear like it will be much of a contest at the Women’s World Cup on Sunday, and the spread doesn’t feel like it is big enough. We could see Sweden winning by at least four goals against a South African side that has struggled against lesser opposition throughout 2023.
