The round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup gets underway on Saturday morning. Spain will be looking for an immediate response after they were humbled in their final Group C match. But, they will be clear favorites to overcome Switzerland.

Before Betting On Spain vs Switzerland

Spain started the Women’s World Cup as one of the leading contenders for glory Down Under. In fact, they have shortened in the odds over recent days, despite suffering a huge 4-0 loss on matchday three in Group C against Japan. The defeat means that they have dropped into the easier knockout stage, as they will avoid the United States. But, they will need to bounce back quickly following a dismal showing against Japan on Monday.

Spain dominated the possession in that match against the Japanese, but they were extremely wasteful in the final third throughout the match. In fact, Japan managed just 23% of the possession, which was the lowest for a winning side in the history of the Women’s World Cup. The 4-0 defeat was also Spain’s heaviest ever defeat at the competition, and was also the first time that they had conceded four goals in a single match.

Switzerland will still be huge outsiders in the betting for this round of 16 clash. However, the European nation finished top of the Group A standings in the opening round, ensuring that they finished ahead of both New Zealand and Switzerland. But, the Swiss will need to step up their level of performance, as they were nervy in both matches against their group rivals.

Switzerland’s only win in Group A was recorded against the Philippines on matchday one, as they scored twice. Defensively, they were solid throughout the opening round, as they didn’t allow a single goal. But, they will need to show more in the final third against one of the better teams in the tournament.
