Gregg Berhalter is finally past for the US team. After spending too much time, the mediocre head coach was fired yesterday. The USMNT’s performances did not improve, and with two years until the 2026 World Cup, the heads of the soccer federation had no choice but to change their strategy.
Out of many names for his successor, one stands above all others – Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp in the Middle of Speculations
The fantastic German manager is one of the greatest in this era. We’ve seen his magical work with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. According to various media outlets, he is the primary pick to lead the US team. But is that really possible?
Odds suggest that his next job is more likely to be back home as Germany’s head coach. Also, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Real Madrid have better chances of landing Klopp.
However, the US team’s situation is urgent. With the 2026 World Cup looming, they can’t afford to miss out on a potential game-changer like Klopp. They may even be willing to offer him unprecedented terms, which would radically change the situation. A few months ago, Klopp was +2500 to lead the US team, now only +1400.
Pulisic Might Lure Klopp
He knows the American players well, and in the past, the 57-year-old didn’t hide his affection for Christian Pulisic, the USMNT captain. Even when the flamboyant forward had tough times or was out due to injuries, Klopp was always saying that he would love to coach Pulisic in Liverpool.
He just might get the opportunity for such an experience now. Though in a bit different circumstances and environment.
Jurgen Klopp stated that he wants to take a rest from football after leaving Liverpool. It’s up to the management of the US Soccer Federation to persuade the German to give up on his initial plan.
