  • Texas defeated Clemson in the first round of the CFP, advancing to the quarterfinals.
  • Arizona State clinched a bye after blowing out Iowa State in the Big-12 championship.
  • These two teams last faced off on December 27, 2007, in a game that Texas won 52-34.

The second CFP quarterfinal is a New Year’s Day Peach Bowl between two sleepers. Our Texas vs Arizona State prediction sees the Longhorns making a statement about the strength of the SEC to the Big-12.

Texas on Track to Advance Again

I was a bit wary about betting on Texas entering the CFP after they avoided playing 7 of the top 8 teams in the SEC. Their win over Clemson helped to quiet any doubts, but I still don’t know if the Longhorns have legs to make the finals. Their two losses to Georgia show they are a step short of the other top teams. That being said, Arizona State is another soft matchup for Texas, and one they should be able to overcome.

Arizona State Looks to Stun Doubters

The Sun Devils were picked by almost no one to make the CFP in preseason, but wound up winning the Big-12 in their first season since moving conferences. Arizona State is playing with house money now, having earned a bye and a straight shot into the CFP quarterfinals. RB Cam Skattebo has been one of their biggest success factors. He tallied over 200 scrimmage yards and 3 TDs in the win against Iowa State.

Texas vs Arizona State Prediction: Texas Wins Big

Arizona State is in a similar position that Boise State was, relying on their bruising veteran RB to provide the bulk of their offense. While Skattebo’s 165 rushing yards per game average over the last three games is incredibly encouraging, it’s also cause for concern. The Sun Devils need to prepare for Texas to stack the box. If they cannot get their passing game going against the Longhorns’ capable defense, it could be a long day. Texas should win this one.
