Event Preview
All eyes will be on California this weekend, as a competitive leg of the ‘West Coast Swing’ is held at La Quinta Country Club. The stroke play event produced a memorable winner in 2024, with Nick Dunlap becoming only the third amateur player to appear in the event. However, Dunlop remains the only amateur to have won The American Express.
Repeating that feat looks to be a tall order for the American. But, he does typically start the season in excellent form, continuing his momentum after winning this event in 2024 by landing the Barracuda Championship in July.
Justin Thomas looks to have a solid chance, according to the betting. Thomas returned to action with a fine showing at The Sentry at the start of January, finishing in a tie for 26th after finishing 19-under.
However, Patrick Cantlay could be a sleeper pick at the current prices available. The American has a consistent record at The American Express, including when finishing second in the 2021 event, ultimately falling short of Kim Si-Woo by a single shot.
The American Express Prediction
Tony Finau is a juicy price this weekend, and could hold interesting claims. Finau returned to action for the first time this year with a fine showing at The Sentry at the start of the month. He finished 21-under to take a share of 15th. His record at La Quinta is worth considering, and he makes a lot of appeal.
