The Premier League continues this weekend, with two games being played on New Year’s Day. Tottenham Hotspur could see their advantage in the race for the Champions League spots diminished by the time that they kick off on Sunday, and Aston Villa will be the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Before Betting On Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur will feel as though they are in a race for the top four going into the early days of 2023, and they could even come into this fixture sitting fifth if Manchester United beat Wolves on New Year’s Eve. Spurs have been the faltering side in the race for the Champions League spots, as they have picked up just two wins in their last six league fixtures.

They also come into this match after just about avoiding defeat in their first fixture following the World Cup. Spurs needed a late comeback to avoid defeat at Brentford, with Harry Kane getting himself on the scoresheet in a dramatic 2-2 draw. However, Spurs boast a very good record against Villa, as they have won 12 of the last 14 matches that they have played against the team from the West Midlands.

Aston Villa are yet to completely drag themselves away from the relegation battle, as they still only remain five points above the drop zone. However, Unai Emery has already shown that he is capable of getting the best out of this squad, and their 3-1 defeat against Liverpool could have been very different if they could have converted their chances in that defeat.

Villa have still won two of their previous three, and a rare victory in London could lift them into the top half of the standings for the first time this season on Sunday. The Midlands side has a poor record in the capital, as they have lost their last five. Meanwhile, they have failed to keep a clean sheet on their previous 13 league visits to London.

Tottenham will desperately need to pick up victory in this fixture, and their record on New Year’s Day is reliable enough. They have won seven of their last eight on the opening day of the New Year, but they will need to start much quicker after falling behind in their last six Premier League fixtures.
