The Saints might employ a two quarterback system with head coach Sean Payton refusing to name a starter for their week 3 matchup with the Seahawks.

Two Quarterback System a Possibility

With head coach Sean Payton calling the shots, a two quarterback system is a possibility. There is also the chance he could just be bluffing. With Payton it’s hard to tell because he always keeps his cards close to his vest. Over the course of his head coaching career, he has built a reputation for being one of the great risk takers in the league. He is also known as an offensive genius.

For all of these reasons, if he says that the Saints might employ two quarterback system, there’s no telling what that means. Will Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill split snaps? Not necessarily as a two quarterback system could just mean depending on down and yards to go, Hill would spell Teddy. Don’t be surprised to see both QB’s on the field at the same time. Hill’s versatility offers offensive matchup issues for any team in the league.

Teddy Bridgewater Should Be Better

The New Orleans Saints gave up a third round pick last year to acquire Teddy Bridgewater for a moment like this. As the highest paid backup QB in the NFL, it’s time for him earn that money. He has come under criticism for his performance last week but that was a unique situation.

Sean Payton has come to Bridgewater’s defense saying bad offensive line play coupled with penalties were the reason. With a full week to prepare, he should be much better than he was last week. The environment certainly won’t help him though. Seattle is one of the toughest places to play for opposing offenses and it will be deafening as usual.

That being said, Bridgewater has been with the team long enough that he should feel comfortable in the Saints system. For that matter so has Taysom Hill. Both have been with the team for long enough that there should be some sense of familiarity with the playbook. Add to that the fact that Sean Payton is one of the best offensive minds in the game. He will surely look to avoid situations that both quarterbacks are not comfortable with. Their skill sets are very different that Drew Brees.

Drew Brees Will Not Be Placed On IR

Sean Payton said that the team will not be placing franchise quarterback Drew Brees on the injured reserve list. Had they done that, he would be required to sit out a minimum of eight weeks. The team still don’t have a timetable for his return. The move not to place Brees on IR has given a lot of Saints fans hope that Brees will be back sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, the Saints will be experimenting with this two quarterback system. Nobody knows exactly what Payton has in store which is part of the beauty of this Saints team. They still have enough weapons at the skill positions that Sean Payton could come up with some very unique looks. We will have to wait until this weekend to find out.
