The contrast in age is a great story for the U.S Open Women’s final. Veteran Serena Williams will look to win her 24th Grand Slam title while Bianca Andreescu looks to win her first. It has been quite a remarkable run for the young Canadian who won the Rogers Cup in her home city of Toronto. Now she has a chance to win her first major at 19 years old against one of the all time greats of the sport.
It will not be easy as Serena Williams will be playing in her tenth U.S Open final. She’s won the tournament an impressive six times and will be the favorite in this one. She will know better than to underestimate Andreescu who is clearly riding a high after her win Toronto.
Andreescu Can Win U.S Open Women’s Final
Bianca Andreescu has come a long way in the last few months. She turned 19 in June and she is the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final since 2014. No Canadian has ever won a Grand Slam tournament so it would be a historic feat for Andreescu. It’s ironic that the two will meet again after Williams had to retire at the Rogers Open due to injury a few weeks ago.
There’s very little chance of that happening this time around at the U.S Open. Serena is chasing Grand Slam number 24 and at her age she knows that there won’t be very many opportunities left. At the same time, the incredible ascension of Andreescu has to be respected. She has a 44-4 record in the last twelve months. She will finish ranked in the top 10 after this tournament regardless of the result. This time last year, she was ranked No. 208.
Their Road to the Final
Serena Williams didn’t have much trouble reaching another U.S Open final. She has only dropped a single set in the tournament and that was way back in the second round. Williams was absolutely dominant in the Quarter Finals making quick work of her opponent 6-1, 6-0. She then took care of business against fifth ranked Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final
Bianca Andreescu’s road to the U.S Open Women’s final was a little less straight forward. In her last match she really showed why she has every chance at winning her first Grand Slam. Her style is very difficult for opponents to figure out as she employs every kind of shot in the book. When you listen to other players on the tour describe her game, they usual say that she is an all around player. That fact alone should make for an open final.
History Will Be Made On Saturday In New York
Regardless of the outcome, history will be made at the U.S Open Women’s final. Either Serena Williams will have the most Grand Slam wins in women’s history or Bianca Andreescu will be the first Canadian to win one. Whatever the case it will be fun to watch.
