Liverpool Hoping To Bounce Back
It has been a season full of disappointing results for Liverpool, but none were as disappointing as the performance than they put in last week against Real Madrid. The Reds made countless defensive mistakes throughout the game, which effectively handed the advantage to Real Madrid. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a habit of bouncing back from setbacks in the first leg. They have lost 13 previous European games by at least two goals before going on to progress with a second leg performance.
The most recent example of this bouncebackability came back in the 2018-19 season, as Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona. However, that evening saw Anfield full of Liverpool fans, which won’t be the case this evening. Despite that victory over Barcelona, Liverpool still have a disappointing record against Spanish sides, as they have lost five in eleven games against Spanish opposition.
Madrid Looking To Complete Job
Real Madrid did much of the heavy lifting in last week’s first leg, but they will still need a professional display against Liverpool on Wednesday evening. History also suggests that Madrid will be able to see out the tie, as they have gone on to progress in 15 of the 16 games where they have had a first leg advantage of at least two goals. The only exception to that rule came in the 2003-04 season, as they were knocked out by Monaco after winning in Spain 4-2.
Madrid looked very comfortable last week and would have been disappointed that they didn’t extend the advantage that they had when Liverpool where on the ropes. Vinicius scored twice in the win for Madrid, while Karim Benzema also found the next last week. Confidence in the camp will be high coming into the fixture this week, as Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Barcelona in the league in their most recent fixture.

Real Madrid have only visited Anfield on two previous occasions in the Champions League. The results that they have got couldn’t be more contrasting. They won the most recent fixture 3-0 in October 2014, but lost the meeting before that 4-0 in March 2009.

This tie is finely poised, and could easily go either way on Wednesday night. The fact that there are no fans in attendance could be crucial for Liverpool’s chances. However, we expect them to still get the win on Wednesday evening, but it will be hard to see the Reds keeping Madrid out at the opposite end.
