The third golf major of the season takes place this weekend, as all eyes will be on the exclusive Los Angeles Country Club. A huge purse of $17.5 million will be available to players in action at the event, with Matt Fitzpatrick coming into the US Open as the defending champion after winning a first major in 2022.

Before Betting On US Open

The US Open is one of the most exciting majors on the calendar, with the fact that the event moves to a new course every season, making it more challenging to claim victory. Rory McIlroy holds the tournament record scores, after shooting a 268 and going -16 when landing victory in 2011. However, the latter of those records is jointly-held with Brooks Koepka.

Both players are among the solid contenders this weekend, with McIlroy looking to end his long wait for major success. The Northern Irishman remains one of the best golfers on the planet, but the fact that he dipped out of contention in the final round for the second event running at the Canadian Open would be a concern. Koepka comes into the third major in excellent form, as the American was a dominant winner of the PGA Championship on his previous appearance.

Californian local Jon Rahm often excels in the state that he calls home, having already won twice in the Golden State this year. The Spanish star previously landed victory in this major back in 2021, which was also held in the California region in San Diego. Scottie Scheffler heads the betting this weekend, but he will need to bounce back to form on the greens if he is to land a victory for the first time at the US Open.

A number of players have previous experience at the major that shouldn’t be ignored, including Tommy Fleetwood. The English player finished second at the US Open in 2018, and he comes into this weekend’s event after an impressive display when finishing in a close second at the Canadian Open.

When it comes to assessing the contenders this weekend, one trend is hard to ignore. Six of the previous seven winners have been first time major victors. For that reason, we like the chances of Viktor Hovland.

The Norwegian was excellent at the PGA Championship to take second, and we could see the greens this weekend playing in his favor. At a price, Tyrrell Hatton also comes into the major in excellent recent form.
